Did you know that many household cleaning products contain ingredients that are dangerous to the environment? Harsh chemicals are added to these products that are not only bad for the planet, but can also be harmful to your health.

As a homeowner, you can choose better cleaning ingredients to minimize the toxicity in your home. Here are a few effective alternatives to common cleaning chemicals:

1. Foaming Toilet Cleaner

Vinegar and baking soda can be used together to create a natural, effective toilet bowl cleaner. Add a cup of baking soda in the toilet and leave it to sit for an hour. Next, pour 1 to 2 cups of vinegar over the baking soda. You will see the two products react and foam up. Scrub to loosen debris, and flush.

2. Mold Removal

It is common for mold or mildew to grow in humid, wet environments, such as in the bathroom or under the sink. In a spray bottle, combine 1 teaspoon of tea tree essential oil with 1 cup of water. Shake well. Use this mixture to coat the areas where mold would grow. Tea Tree Oil is a natural antifungal and mold doesn’t like it.

3. Multipurpose Cleaner

Vinegar is a great multi-surface cleaner because of the disinfecting properties. It is also effective for the removal of scum and buildup. Some people don’t like the smell of plain vinegar, so they infuse it with citrus peels or a few drops of citrus essential oil. Put 2 parts vinegar to 1 part water in a spray bottle and you’re ready to tackle those germs. Add a bit of dish soap to the mix for an effective soap scum cleaner. Vinegar is an acid, so it’s best to avoid wood, granite, & stone surfaces.
