5 Tips to Protect the Carpets When Hosting Holiday Parties

Do you love the excitement of preparing a big meal, setting up the decorations, and hosting friends and family for an evening celebration? The holiday season is a great time to connect with people that you love, but it can take a lot of work to prepare for a party and clean up after it’s done.

Often, homeowners bring in professional carpet and upholstery cleanings before inviting guests into their homes. Then, it can be disappointing to find stains and messes left behind after the people are gone. When food and drinks are involved, it’s inevitable that something might be spilled. Here are a few tips you can use to protect your carpets while hosting a party:

  1. Set Out Area Rugs

Not only do rugs add a touch of style to your living room, but they are also great for protecting your carpets. If something happens – like a red wine spill – it’s much cheaper to replace an area rug instead of an entire room of carpet. Protect your carpets by putting rugs in high traffic areas as a preventive measure.

  1. Use Furniture Covers

Avoid the cost of upholstery cleaning by protecting your most expensive furniture with covers. You can use fitted covers that look great and add an extra layer to minimize the risk of stains from food and drinks.

  1. Close Off Rooms

It’s appropriate to choose rooms in the house where guests are not invited to be. Shut the doors and lock the handles to keep people out. Or, if the door doesn’t have a lock, put a small “Do Not Enter” sign on the handle. This protects the carpets and other valuables in the room.

  1. Host Outside

If the weather is nice enough, you can host the party outside. Consider renting outdoor heating units to take the chill off on a cooler night. One option is to hold the party in a garage or under a backyard awning to add a little wind protection for guests.

  1. Prevent Spills

Reduce the risk of accidents by providing plenty of seating and tables where guests can set down their food and drinks. If there aren’t enough tables available, then guests might set down their items on any available surface, increasing the risk of an accident.
