Maintenance Tips to Prepare the Car for a Summer Road Trip

Planning a road trip this summer? Before you head out, be sure to do a quick mechanical and fluids check of your vehicle. Doing so just might help you avoid mechanical breakdowns or other headaches that could happen during your open road adventures. Here are some tips to getting your car ready for the journey ahead:
Check Fluids
Get under the hood and check that all fluid levels are where they need to be. This check includes engine oil, transmission fluid, gasoline, antifreeze/coolant, brake fluid, wiper fluid, power steering fluid, etc. Some fluids, such as engine oil, need to be refreshed more often than others, such as transmission fluid. It’s a good idea to review your owner’s manual for the recommended mileage intervals to refresh your car’s fluids. You should also look for any evidence of leaks while you’re focusing on the fluid check.
Check Hoses and Belts
Lift the hood and check your hoses for any cracks or bulges. On your hoses, look for evidence of any fraying or ragged edges of any kind. If you see evidence of any wear or weakness, it’s probably a good idea to swap out those parts.
Check Battery
Is your battery more than a two years old? Check the terminal heads for corrosion and make sure the leads are snug. If your car is a bit sluggish when you turn the key over to start the car, it may be time for a replacement. At the very least, take along a good pair of jumper cables.
Check Tire Pressure and Tread
Low tire pressure wastes fuel and wears the tread of your tire much more quickly. Over inflation can also be a serious problem—particularly on a sizzling hot highway surface, which could lead to a dangerous blowout at high speed. The recommended tire pressure for your vehicle is likely listed on the car door or glove compartment. Good tread matters too as it is the point of contact with which you maintain control. If you find your tires are not worthy of a long road trip, you should replace them. It’s a smart decision and a safe one.
