How to Avoid Plumbling Problems During the Holidays

Whether you’re looking forward to winter or dreading the cooler weather, it’s definitely on the way. As a homeowner, a change in seasons usually means you need to do some preventive home maintenance. Follow these steps to get your plumbing ready for winter.

tapProtect your pipes.

Water expands when it freezes, putting pressure on vulnerable areas in your plumbing system. Pipes are especially prone to freezing when they’re placed in poorly insulated places, such as the basement, attic, or outside.

  • Place insulation sleeves on vulnerable pipes.
  • Install proper insulation in basements and attics.
  • Let a faucet drip during periods of extreme cold.
  • If you notice slower water flow, call a plumber right away. It’s possible to resolve the problem without damage to your home.
  • If a pipe does burst, immediately turn off your main water line to prevent further water damage.
  • Keep the number of a trusted, 24-hour plumber posted on your fridge or in your office, so that you won’t waste time if a problem does occur.

Prepare for the holidays.

If you’re expecting house guests due to holiday celebrations, remember that having extra people in your home can cause extra strain on your pipes. Follow these tips to avoid plumbing disasters:

  • A full house usually means you’ll be cooking large meals. Avoid pouring grease and fats down the drain
  • Don’t put stringy, fibrous tissue in the garbage disposal (chicken skins, pumpkin pulp, banana peels, etc)
  • Turn on the disposal before adding garbage. Run cold water through the drain for 15 seconds before and after using it.
  • Remember that only toilet paper should be flushed down toilets. It’s acceptable to place a friendly reminder card in the bathroom so that guests with different habits are aware of house policies.
  • Turn up your water heater just slightly, so that your system can provide enough hot water for extra baths and showers.
