The Best Cleaning Tips for Granite Countertops
Filed under: Home Cleaning
Granite is one of the most popular materials for kitchen countertops. Homeowners love the look of natural stone in the kitchen. Plus, these surfaces are great to resist the impact of staining and bacteria. If you choose granite for your kitchen or bathrooms, then it is important to ensure that you are using the right products to clean the surfaces.
Granite Cleaning Tips
Here are a few tips to help with your countertops:
- Stay away from harsh cleaners and chemical-based products
- Even though vinegar is a natural product, it can still have an abrasive impact on the sealant
- Don’t use abrasive scrubbing tools, such as a wire brush
- Reseal the countertops every two to four years
- If something spills, wipe up the mess as quickly as possible to avoid staining
- Use warm water and a few drops of dish soap to wipe the counters
- Special granite countertop cleaners can also be used if you want a different product, but soap and water work just fine
- Microfiber is a great fabric to use on granite, offering the disinfecting benefits without the abrasiveness of other materials
Follow these tips to preserve the quality of your countertops and ensure the performance of the stone.
Removing Stains from Granite
Even if you are consistent with the care of the countertops, there is still a possibility that a stain might show up. Get rid of the stain by making a baking soda paste. This treatment is beneficial for all types of stains, especially oil-based stains. For water-based stains, try mixing the baking soda with hydrogen peroxide.
Apply the paste to the stain and scrub it gently with a microfiber cloth. Rinse well, then repeat if necessary.
For tough stains, you might need to apply the paste and let it sit for a day or more. After the paste is placed on the stain, tape a piece of plastic wrap over the top to seal in the moisture in the paste. Then wipe and rince after one or two days.
