Clean Your Window Screens to Prevent Allergic Reactions

Women cleaning a windowSpring is here, and along with spring comes allergy season. Chances are, you or someone in your family is feeling pretty miserable right now. Pollen and other allergens are in the air, and it can be hard to avoid allergy attacks. After all, it’s not like you can just stop breathing!

You can’t avoid air, but you can take measures to ensure that the air you breathe is cleaner and healthier for you. Many people buy fancy air filters for their air conditioning units, but did you know you already have some pretty effective filters installed on your home? Window screens help to filter the air, so that fewer allergens enter your home (and your lungs).

Unfortunately, many of you aren’t cleaning your window screens properly. And when you allow your window screens to accumulate dirt, you can actually make your allergy problem worse! This is because pollen, mold spores, and other allergens can become trapped in the dirt on your window screens. It builds up over time, and then one day you decide to open your windows for some “fresh air”. But instead of fresh air, what you get is air full of allergens!

This is because of the dirty build-up on your window screens. Once you finally open your windows, all of that gunk blows right into your home. And now you’ve triggered a full-blown allergy attack. Probably not what you pictured when you decided to get some fresh air!

Obviously, the easiest way to prevent this problem is to clean your window screens regularly. Since you may be engaging in some spring cleaning already, now is the perfect time to clean your screens as well. By getting rid of built-up dust and pollen, you can ensure a steady supply of cleaner air coming into your home every day, and you will protect yourself and other allergic family members.

Aside from cleaning your window screens, remember to dust your home regularly to rid yourself of allergens. But remember not to “dry dust”, or you’ll just knock the dust around and actually inhale more of it. Use a furniture polish or wet rag to ensure that you actually remove the dust rather than redistributing it through the air.
