How to Check Your Home for Bed Bugs
Summer is the most common time of year to plan a family vacation. If you were recently on the road, did you bring home some unexpected souvenirs: bed bugs? There is a potential risk of picking up these hitchhikers if you were staying in a hotel or B&B.
The problem is that exposure to bed bugs on the road often increases the likelihood that you will bring them home. The bugs can climb onto your luggage and clothing, then settle in with your family when you get back to the house.
Here are a few things you can do to perform a manual check in your home to see if you have a bed bug problem:
Check the Mattress
Pull up the sheets and look for any potential signs of bed bugs on the mattress or bedding:
- Live bugs crawling around
- Rust or red-colored stains (blood)
- Dark-colored smears or specks (bug excrement)
- Small eggshells that are pale in color
- Tiny egg shell casings
- Musty odors
Make sure you inspect every area of the bed: the sheets, pillows, mattresses, seams, crevices, and more. The bugs might be hiding in the seams, which is why you need to be thorough with this inspection.
Inspect the Room
Additionally, look at other areas around your bedroom to see if you can identify any of the signs of bed bugs listed above. These bugs can live in clothing, furniture, carpets, and more. So, you’ll want to inspect every part of the room if you suspect that there might be a bedbug infestation.
