Cold weather is the driving force behind rats, squirrels, and mice looking for warmer conditions during the winter. You do not want that destination to be the inside of your home. So what can you do to prevent pests from invading your home for the winter?

5 Tips for Keeping Pests Out During the Winter

You can prepare your house for a pest-free winter by following these tips:

  1. Trim Trees for the Winter: Squirrels, rats, and other pests have easy access to your attic and chimney when your trees are hanging over the roof. Trim back those trees to keep pests away for the winter.
  2. Eliminate Standing Water: While animals can go a long time without food, they do need water to survive. If you have standing water in your attic or leaky faucets, this will attract animals to your home.
  3. Seal all Vents, Screens, and Cracks: Eliminate any points of entry by fixing screens, replacing any rotting wood, and sealing up cracks.
  4. Close Doors and Windows: Take notice of your garage door and avoid leaving it open during the winter. If the pests move into your garage, they are one step closer to getting inside your home. Also, if you have kids playing in the yard, invest in a door that will immediately close to avoid animals sneaking inside the warm house.
  5. Clean Up Crumbs: Pick up after yourself. If you keep a clean house with no immediate food sources available, pests will not seek out your home. Remember that animals have strong senses of smell, so even if you can’t smell anything in the pantry, they can. Seal up cereal bags and crackers that may attract furry friends.

Once you have followed these steps, you can keep your house free of pets for the winter. If you are not familiar with checking out your chimney or attic, call on an expert to do a full inspection of your home before the winter hits.
