Simple DIY Solutions for Common Garage Door Problems

Day after day, your garage door opener works tirelessly to perform its job of raising and lowering the garage door. But like all appliances in your home, it will occasionally encounter issues. If you’re having some trouble with your garage door, it’s important to fix it right away. Delaying repair can put your family’s safety and the security of your home at risk. But before you call for help, there are a few things you can try to fix the issue yourself. Most garage door problems fall into one of two things:

Garage Door Won’t Open

If this is your problem, start by checking the antenna inside the garage. You’ll likely find it as a small wire hanging down off the opener unit. Is the antenna blocked by something? Does it look like it has been damaged somehow? If so, the remote in your car cannot communicate with the garage door opener.

If everything looks to be in order, then move on to the next potential problem: your remote’s battery may be dead. You can confirm this by using the keypad or wall transmitter to open the garage door. If the door still opens, you should replace the battery in your remote. If the antenna or remote battery are not the problem, it could be something more serious such as a garage door spring or motor issue. You should call a professional for help.

Garage Door Won’t Close

If the garage door is stuck open, or suddenly reverses back upward when closing, double check that something isn’t triggering the safety open feature. If an obstacle is in the way, the door will not close. If that isn’t the problem, you may have a dirty garage photo eye. Try cleaning the lenses on both sides of the garage door. Be sure you use a clean scratch free cloth and glass cleaner that won’t streak. Lastly, if that doesn’t solve the problem, double check the photo eyes are aligned.
