Daylight Savings Time: Home Maintenance To-Do List
Filed under: Home Cleaning
As time moves us deeper into autumn, our thoughts begin to turn toward the end of the year. Before you know it, the holiday season will be upon us, with all of its hustle and bustle. But there is a window of time right after Halloween to prepare for the upcoming festivities, starting with the daylight savings time change in early November. When it’s time to move back the clock, take it as a friendly reminder to do some home maintenance upkeep. Here are several things you should do before the holidays get underway:
Have the Furnace Inspected
Bring in a professional to check your heating system to make sure it’s ready for the cool weather season. Even if you don’t use it all that much, regular service is essential to maximizing the useful life of the equipment. Now is a great time to have it checked out. While you’re at it, make sure the thermostat is adjusted to a comfortable temperature.
Replace Filters
Generally, your home’s HVAC system air filters should be replaced every three months. If you haven’t done your autumn change out, now is a great time to get that done. With cooler weather approaching, it’s a good time to prep your heating and cooling system for the change in weather.
Check Window and Door Seals
Windows account for roughly 30 percent of home energy loss. Fortunately, you can avoid this by checking and resealing any windows and doors that are drafting.
Battery Updates
Fire and carbon monoxide alarm batteries need to be updated every so often. Now is as good a time as any to refresh them. You’ll be grateful to avoid the incessant chirping of a low battery warning in the middle of a winter night!
