Don’t Forget: 4 Places in the Home that Need to be Dusted

Dust is easy to clean up, but you need to know where it is collecting if you want to stay ahead of the dust bunnies that accumulate over time. If you see visible dust on the furniture and shelves, then you can be sure that there is dust hiding in the nooks and crannies of the house.

These are a few important spots to check when you are dusting the house:

  1. Baseboards and Molding: Dust on the woodwork usually isn’t noticed until there is enough of a collection to see the color changes on the paint. Instead of waiting for the buildup, grab a microfiber cloth to wipe down the baseboards and molding at least once a month.
  2. Ceiling Fans: Have you had the unpleasant experience of turning on a ceiling fan that hasn’t been used in a few months, only to get hit with dust and grime flying through the air? Ceiling fan blades can be the perfect spot of dust to collect. Even if you can’t see the buildup, you should always be proactive in wiping up the dust – especially when you haven’t used the fan in a while. The easiest solution is to us an extension-rod duster to reach the top of the fans.
  3. Intake and Exhaust Vents: Dust moves through your HVAC system and other vents in the house. Check the intake vents once a month for cleaning. You might consider using a vacuum attachment to get the dust on the vents. Or, use a rag to wipe away the grime. Don’t forget to check the exhaust vents in the bathroom!
  4. Window Coverings: It doesn’t matter what type of window coverings you have in your home – they all collect dust. Certain types of curtains can be removed and washed on a gentle cycle (but always check the cleaning instructions first). If you have blinds or shutters, then use a dry sponge to remove as much dust as possible. Another option is to use a vacuum attachment. If the blinds have been neglected, then you might need to wipe them down with a wet, soapy rag after removing as much of the dry dust as you can.
