How to Minimize the Risk of Pests in the Garage

The garage is more than a covered place to park the cars. This space is a functional area where many homeowners store gardening tools, sports equipment, and more. Even though there are often storage shelves in the garage, there are a few things that you don’t want to be collecting: spiders, rats, mice, and other common pests.

A little bit of cleaning and maintenance can go a long way to keep the critters out of your garage. Here are a few tips to help:

  • Close the Garage Door: Even though it seems like a common-sense tip, it is an important reminder to keep the garage doors closed as much as possible. Not only will you minimize the risk of pests, but you can also keep out the neighborhood cats and potential thieves.
  • Repair Broken Garage Doors: Even the smallest crack in the garage door could be an opening used by pests to get inside. Check all of the doors and windows in the garage to see if there are any gaps that need to be sealed. If the door is outdated, then it might be time to invest in a new door to prevent pest infestation.
  • Storage Organization: Throwing the baseball gloves and camping gear in a pile might keep things out of the way. But, these unorganized areas will draw in unwanted pests. Insects and small animals are always looking for small spaces where they can build their homes. Prevent the infestation by keeping clutter off the floor and organizing items in plastic storage containers.
  • Clean Your Equipment: Before you store the camping grill or coolers in the garage, take a moment to hose everything down to remove food particles. Bits of leftover food will draw in insects and rodents.
  • Put a Lid on the Trash Cans: Open garbage cans are an invitation for unwanted pests to move into the garage. Keep the cans sealed with a lid. Also, don’t forget to take the can to the curb every week.
